With a general election on the horizon, August will see The Law Association of New Zealand host two of the country’s most senior political figures in as many weeks.
On 6 August, Attorney-General Hon Chris Bishop joins attendees for a luncheon at The Northern Club. Three weeks later, Prime Minister Rt Hon Christopher Luxon will speak to the profession at the Pullman Auckland.
The Prime Minister event will include a Q&A with guests, giving the profession a direct voice on the issues that matter most.
The Law Association President Tony Herring says events like these reflect something important about how The Law Association operates.
“We are not a lobbyist group. But we do believe that the people shaping New Zealand’s laws should hear from those who work with them every day. These events create that conversation in a way that a submission or a meeting never quite can.”
For a government shaping a legislative programme ahead of an election, the views of the legal profession will be important. For those in attendance, it is a direct line to the people making decisions that affect the courts, legal aid, the regulatory environment and the frameworks their clients navigate every day.
The Law Association has hosted leaders from across the political spectrum over the past year, with Labour leader Chris Hipkins attending a function in 2025. The principle is consistent: regardless of party, New Zealand’s lawyers have a legitimate interest in how the country is governed and the law is made.
Tony Herring says the cross-party approach matters.
“We have hosted several other politicians and leaders from the legal industry and hope to have a few more before the election too. The law does not belong to one side of politics, and neither does this organisation.”
With an election looming, the timing sharpens that purpose. Seats at both events are limited.
