Labour says that if it wins power the party will introduce a Government Policy Statement on immigration that reflects the country’s workforce, demographic, housing and infrastructure needs.
The Labour plan does not discuss any actual numbers, simply saying that “immigration should be planned around what New Zealand needs, and it should be managed in a way that’s fair to everyone here and everyone who comes.”
“A Labour government will plan immigration around what New Zealand’s workforce, housing and infrastructure can support, and make sure migrants who commit to this country are backed to get ahead,” it says.
It will also increase the period permanent residents must be in the before becoming eligible for citizenship from two to four, allow migrants to move between accredited employers after three months, protect humanitarian appeals against deportation, and set up a citizenship pathway for children born in New Zealand.
