Labour says it would force supermarket giants Woolworths and Foodstuff to run their retail and wholesale arms independently, in a move it says will help smaller competitors and drive down checkout prices.
Labour Commerce and Consumer Affairs spokeswoman Arena Williams said it was difficult for small players to complete if the big supermarkets’ wholesale businesses offered deals that favoured their own retail outlets. She said Labour would:
- Open the market by requiring Woolworths and Foodstuffs to run their wholesale supply businesses independently from their retail stores.
- Guarantee Kiwi grocers the right to buy stock from any wholesaler they choose, on fair terms.
- Free small grocers like Four Square operators from their restraints of trade by voiding anti-competitive arrangements that keep their prices high.
- Ban ‘junk fees’ charged to suppliers.
- Make rebate and data deals more transparent.
