A Labour government would cap weekly public transport fares at $20 in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, and at $10 everywhere else in the country. Chris Hipkins announced on June 10.
The policy means people travelling by bus, train, or ferries will have free trips once they hit the weekly cap.
“This is real cost-of-living relief. It means cheaper commutes, more money left at the end of the week, and a public transport system that works for everyone,” Hipkins said.
Labour estimates the average commuter will save around $1200 annually.
