The Waitangi Tribunal has reiterated its stance that the government’s treaty reference work breaches the Treaty of Waitangi and risks bringing about “discriminatory outcomes” for Māori.
The treaty reference work, part of NZ First’s coalition agreement with National, involves examining references to the treaty contained in existing legislation, then either making them more consistent or removing them.
