Uber operates platform businesses for transportation and food delivery services. It contracts with drivers who provide these services through the Uber app. As of November 2022, it had 11,000 drivers in New Zealand. 

Over the past three years, Uber has been involved in a legal battle with the E Tū and First Union which have sought declarations that Uber drivers are employees (as defined in s 6 of the Employment Relations Act 2000).
