Police have launched roadside drug testing in Wellington, with plans to expand nationwide by mid-2026.
Transport Minister Chris Bishop described the development as “a big step forward for road safety”.
“Drivers who get behind the wheel despite being impaired by drug use put themselves and others at serious risk. Around 30% of all road deaths now involve an impairing drug,” he said.
