Prime Minister Christopher Luxon says the government is working on a proposal to cap local government rates, which official figures show was the largest contributor to New Zealand inflation rate over the past year.
Luxon said the Statistics New Zealand data showing rates rose an average of 12.2% in the year to June, compared to inflation of 2.7%, highlighted the “unacceptable burden on ratepayers.
