Public Service Minister Judith Collins KC says she introduce changes aimed at making public servants “get back to basics” and delivering value for money to taxpayers.
When the Public Service Act was passed in 2020, it was described as a move to make the public service more collaborative and break up bureaucratic silos.
Collins said the reforms reduced the focus on efficient use of taxpayer funds, meaning New Zealand went backwards in key areas such as health, education and crime.
“The Act as it stands is impeding the public service from doing its best work, which in is in turn holding back the country from making progress on economic growth and other government priorities,” she said.
Collins said she intends to introduce The Public Service Amendment Bill to Parliament in July.
