Tik Tok has started to come back online in the US after President-elect Donald Trump said he would issue an executive order to temporarily stop the ban.
The social media site started to “go dark” in the US yesterday after the Supreme Court on Friday backed a federal law requiring it to be sold or shut down by 19 January because of concerns that its Chinese owners, Byte Dance, posed a security risk.
In a unanimous decision, the court rejected the social media company’s First Amendment challenge, though it acknowledged the app’s wide-ranging cultural impact.
Major app stores started removing the site in the US on Sunday.
Trump said after his inauguration, he would delay the law coming into effect “so we can make a deal to protect our national security” and suggested the US could own Tik Tok in a 50-50 joint venture. To date, Byte Dance has rejected all suggestions that the site might be sold.
