Officials have closed Nelson courthouse with immediate effect to undertake seismic strengthening after an inspection found it was earthquake prone.
The Justice Ministry said an initial seismic assessment received in recent days rated the building at just 15% of the New Building Standard (NBS). Anything under 34% is generally considered earthquake-prone.
It estimated the courthouse would be closed for three to four months and planning was underway to minimise impacts on court operations.
“Some scheduled court events will continue virtually while some other events may need to be rescheduled. Anyone who is expected to attend court during the remediation work period should await instruction from court officials,” Justice Ministry chief operating officer Carl Crafar said.
