Plans by the US Department of Justice to break up Google might be the least of the company’s problems.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Google’s core business is under siege as users, particularly younger people, are increasingly turning to AI and other platforms such as Tik-Tok for information. Results delivered by Google’s search engine are deteriorating as the web becomes flooded with AI-generated content, the WSJ says.
In 2025, eMarketer projects Google’s share of US search-engine advertising revenue will fall below 50% for the first time since the company was formed. The WSJ says the shift is largely due to users bypassing Google and instead searching for goods on Amazon, taking with them billions of dollars in ad revenue.
