Attorney-General Judith Collins has told AI users to consider their security as China-based DeepSeek platform shakes up the tech sector, warning “if things look too good to be true, sometimes they are”.
“Continuing developments in AI are a timely reminder that by installing any application, users are agreeing their data will be subject to the legal and privacy requirements of the nation that the company operates under – and they can be vastly different from New Zealand law and protections,” Collins wrote on LinkedIn.
“The National Cybersecurity Centre ( part of GCSB) advises that, for their own security, New Zealanders should take a proactive approach to their privacy & data when downloading and using any mobile app or other software. Be aware that some apps may access additional information, such as your location, address, phone number, email address, contacts or other sensitive information.”
DeepSeek has upended conventional wisdom about AI, claiming to match rival platforms without multi-billion dollar costs.
