Criminal defence barrister Samira Taghavi has been elected Vice-President of The Law Association (TLANZ).
An active member of the organisation for the past six years, Taghavi is also a member of the TLANZ Council, the convenor of its Public & Administrative Law Committee and a member of the TLANZ Criminal Law Committee and the CPD Committee.
She is the practice manager at ActiveLegal and a regular contributor to LawNews.
Taghavi said she was “deeply honoured” by her election and was stepping into the role with pride and a strong sense of responsibility.
“The Law Association has been an important part of my legal career and it has been a privilege to contribute to its growth in recent years, including a significant increase in membership and a strengthened focus on supporting our practitioners,” she said.
“At its core, the Association exists to uphold the rule of law – the foundation of our profession and a principle that must remain front and centre in everything we do.
“I come from a background where I have seen first-hand what happens when the rule of law is ignored, and that perspective shapes my commitment to this role. It is precisely for this reason that, in New Zealand, I consistently and deliberately advocate against ideology being permitted to infiltrate the rule of law or to dictate how lawyers are expected to operate.”
Taghavi said her focus was on representing The Law Association’s members and being “a clear and effective voice” on their behalf.

Taghavi practised law in her native Iran before coming to New Zealand to study for her LLM.
Herring, The Law Association’s president, congratulated Taghavi on her election and also acknowledge the contribution of outgoing Vice-President Julie-Anne Kincade KC who will continue to work with The Law Association as a council member.

The Law Association represents more than 9,200 legal professionals nationally, with just over 55% based outside Auckland.
