Barrister Lynn Hughes, a member of The Law Association’s (TLANZ) Criminal Law Committee, has been appointed as a District Court Judge and will be based in Manukau, Attorney-General Judith Collins KC announced on Friday.

Hughes currently operates out of Sentinel Chambers in Auckland and has specialized in criminal law for more than 20 years.
She was admitted to the bar in 1999 after spending her early career as research counsel in the Wellington District Court before practising in New Plymouth as a litigation solicitor.
Hughes moved to the Public Defence Service in Manukau in 2004, eventually heading up operations in the office until she left in 2021.
She has been active on a range of professional bodies, including the TLANZ Criminal Law Committee, where she has worked with fellow committee members to help shape law reform and make submissions on proposed legislative changes concerning criminal procedure, evidence and courts operations.
“Lynn Hughes’ appointment as a District Court Judge is a well-deserved recognition of her experience and commitment to the law,” The Law Association President Tony Herring said.
“As a member of The Law Association’s Criminal Law Committee, she has been a valued contributor to the profession, and we wish her every success in this important judicial role.”
She has also engaged in legal training in the Pacific, participating in a workshop in Samoa held by TLANZ in 2024.
Hughes will be sworn in on 27 March.
Collins also announced two more District Court appointees. Rohan Cochrane, a director of the law firm Family Law Specialists Ltd, will sit in Napier, and barrister Derek Whitehead will sit in Kaikohe District Court.
