An ACT Party proposal that would have allowed shops to open and hospitality venues to serve alcohol on Good Friday and Easter Sunday has been voted down in Parliament.
The Bill, from ACT’s Cameron Luxton, was defeated 74 to 49 as Labour, the Greens, New Zealand First and Te Pāti Māori all voted against it, along with a number of National MPs.
ACT expressed surprise at the move, saying a rare opportunity for a genuine conscience vote had been wasted.
“Modernising Easter trading has support from Kiwis across the political spectrum, and Cameron’s bill would have ensured that businesses can serve customers over Easter if they want to, while extending existing protections for workers who choose not to work,” it said.
